Fall in Maine: Things to Do Near Prana Nordic This September & October
Maine’s Tapestry of Color:
A Celebration of Autumn Foliage
There’s something special about fall in Maine. The mornings get cooler, the leaves begin to change, and the pace of summer gives way to crisp hikes, farm stands, apple orchards and cozy evenings by the fire.
If you’re staying with us at Prana Nordic this September or October, you don’t have to travel far to experience the best of the season. From apple picking and fall festivals to mountain views and quiet walks through the woods, here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy fall in Maine during your stay.
Visit a Local Farm or Orchard
Fall is a wonderful time to explore the farms and orchards around the Lakes Region. Pick up fresh produce, enjoy the scenery, or spend an afternoon apple picking before heading back to the cabin.
A few nearby options to explore:
Meadow Brook Farm – Raymond
A local farm stand and orchard just a few minutes from Prana Nordic.
Thompson’s Orchards – New Gloucester
A popular spot for apple picking, fresh cider and seasonal treats.
Orchard Ridge Farm – Gorham
Offers seasonal apple and berry picking along with other farm products.
Harvests and picking availability vary throughout the season, so we recommend checking with each farm before heading out.
Take in the Fall Foliage from Pleasant Mountain
For some of the best fall views in the area, head to Pleasant Mountain. Scenic chairlift rides to the summit are offered September 26–27 and October 3–4, giving you a chance to see the changing foliage from above and take in sweeping views across the Lakes Region.
Pleasant Mountain’s Fall Festival on October 10 offers another way to enjoy the mountain, with scenic chairlift rides, live music, and local food and drinks.
Explore Pineland Farms
Pineland Farms is a sprawling 5,000-acre working farm and recreation center in New Gloucester, Maine, offering hands-on agricultural education, award-winning local cheeses, and over 30 kilometers of year-round outdoor trails
Pineland Farms in New Gloucester is an easy place to spend a few hours—or make a full day of it.
Start with a stroll through The Garden, a one-acre public garden filled with more than 130 varieties of perennials, flowering annuals, herbs, vegetables and apple trees. It’s a lovely place for a quiet walk or picnic.
If you’re looking for something a little more active, Pineland also offers disc golf, trails and other outdoor recreation. In the fall, you can explore the 5+ acre corn maze and pumpkin patch at Valley Farm.
Before heading back to the cabins, stop at The Market & Cafe for breakfast or lunch, or pick up local Maine products and seasonal treats to enjoy during your stay.
For a special evening, check the calendar for GRAZE. This year’s final dinner is September 25 and features local ingredients, live music, a four-course dinner and beverage pairings from local purveyors. If it falls during your stay, it’s one to plan ahead for.
Experience the History of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester offers a very different kind of fall outing.
The historic village is home to the last active Shaker community, with beautiful grounds, gardens, historic buildings and a museum. Throughout September and October, the village also hosts workshops and seasonal events.
This fall’s calendar includes craft workshops, a guided mindfulness walk and a Fall Harvest Festival on October 12.
Take a Guided Forest Therapy Walk
If you’d like to experience the Maine woods at a slower pace, consider scheduling a private walk with Connect to Wilderness in Windham.
Forest therapy walks invite you to slow down, engage your senses and spend time in nature without the goal of getting somewhere. Other guided experiences include mindfulness, tea foraging and nature photography walks.
It’s a beautiful complement to a restorative stay at Prana Nordic, especially if slowing down and reconnecting with nature is part of the reason you came.
Enjoy Some Live Music
If an evening of music sounds appealing, there are several options around the Sebago Lake region this fall.
The Beatles Candlelight Experience – Bridgton, September 25
A string trio performs classical arrangements of Beatles songs by candlelight.
Music on Main – Bridgton, September 26 & October 24
Enjoy live music, food and activities in downtown Bridgton.
Naples Rocktoberfest Music Festival & Nightmarket – Naples, October 10
An autumn evening along the Causeway with live music, local vendors and tethered hot air balloon rides.
Spend a Day at a Maine Fair
For a taste of classic Maine in the fall, spend a day at one of the area’s agricultural fairs.
Cumberland Fair – September 27 through October 3
A longstanding Maine tradition with agriculture, animals, food, entertainment and fair festivities.
Fryeburg Fair – October 4–11
One of Maine’s biggest fall traditions and an experience all its own. If your stay overlaps with the fair, it can make for a memorable fall day trip.
Head to Freeport for Fall Festival Weekend
From October 2–4, downtown Freeport comes alive for the annual Freeport Fall Festival.
More than 200 New England artists, makers and local food producers take part, along with live music throughout the weekend. The event is free and makes an easy day trip from the cabins.
It’s also easy to pair the festival with a little shopping, lunch and exploring around Freeport before returning to the quiet of the lake.
Make Your Stay Part of the Experience
Of course, some of the best fall days aren’t built around a specific event.
You may decide not to go anywhere at all.
Schedule an Ayurvedic treatment right at your cabin. Warm up in your private sauna. Step outside into the cool Maine air. Make a cup of tea, gather around the firepit and enjoy the quiet of the woods.
Give yourself some time to simply be.
Ayurvedic Wellness,
at Your Cabin
Ayurvedic Alchemy, our sister wellness practice, offers Ayurvedic treatments including Abhyanga, Marma Point Therapy and other holistic therapies, with appointments available in the comfort and privacy of your cabin.
Fall is a beautiful season to slow down, reconnect with nature and settle into a different pace and sometimes the cabin itself is exactly where you’ll want to spend the day.
A note about seasonal activities: Fall events, schedules and farm activities can change due to weather, harvest conditions and other circumstances. We recommend checking directly with the event, farm or venue before heading out, especially for apple picking and other seasonal activities.
